The Mosaic Fountain ~
Ethiopian Diaspora in Silver Spring
Of those, several thousand Abyssinian immigrants from have made the Silver Spring area their home, opening up at least six ethnic Ethiopian restaurants (so far) within walking distance of this fountain.
All communities have their gathering places ~
and one warm summer evening in Silver Spring ...
I discovered the heartbeat of the Ethiopian community
~ its children ~
splashing and playing
in the Mosaic Fountain.
With its colorful tesserae and life-springs of water,
the fountain became, in that moment,
a metaphor in concrete and tile for the colorful, multinational community springing to life all around it.
I was on my way to a film festival screening,
but I just had to pause for a while and photograph the kids ...
beautiful children of their parents' tomorrow ~
backlit by the sparkling waters,
and enjoying themselves ~
~ with hyalescent skin, each their own watercolor dreams.
